The Colorado Division of Wildlife manages 24 State Wildlife Areas (SWA's) in southeast Colorado.  The main purpose of these areas is for wildlife recreation including fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Location: Kiowa County. To LOWER QUEENS (Neeskah): From Eads, go 15 miles south on HWY 287 to CRC; then 3.5 miles east to Upper Queens. Follow access road south 2 miles. To UPPER QUEENS: From Eads, go 15 miles south on HWY 287 to CRC; then 3.5 miles east. To NEE GRONDA: From Eads, go 15 miles south on HWY 287; then 1 mile. To NEE NOSHE: From Eads, go 11 miles south on HWY 287 to Kiowa County boat ramp access road; then .25 mile east to public boat ramp.

Picket Wire Canyons - View on Map
Location: Otero County. Withers Canyon Trailhead is the only public access into Picket Wire Canyonland. From La Junta, Colorado drive south on Highway 109 for 13 miles; turn right (west) on County Road 802 (David Canyon Road) and continue for 8 miles. Turn left (south) on County Road 25 and travel for 6 miles. Turn left at Picket Wire Corrals onto Forest Service Road 500A. Travel along Forest Service Road 500A for 3 miles, following the signs to Withers Canyon Trailhead. Park at Withers Canyon Trailhead parking loop.
From Springfield, Colorado drive west on Highway 160 for 48 miles, then turn right (north) on Highway 109 for 43 miles; turn left (west) on County Road 802 (David Canyon Road) and continue for 8 miles. Turn left (south) on County Road 25 and continue for 6 miles. Turn left at Picket Wire Corrals onto Forest Service Road 500A. Travel along Forest Service Road 500A for 3 miles, following the signs to Withers Canyon Trailhead. Park at Withers Canyon Trailhead parking loop.
Facilities: 4 vault toilets on trails, drinking water not available
Activities: Hiking, biking, horseback riding; Auto tours (only motorized access into the canyons) provided May & June, September & October, visitors must have their own 4-wheel drive car and make reservations in advance

Vogel Canyon  - View on Map
Location: Otero County. From La Junta, Colorado drive south on Highway 109 for 13 miles. Turn right (west) on County Road 802 for 1.5 miles. Turn left (south) on Forest Service Road 505A for 1.5 miles to the Vogel Canyon parking lot.
From Springfield, Colorado drive west on Highway 160 for 48 miles, then turn right (north) on Highway 109 for 43 miles. Turn left (west) on County Road 802 for 1.5 miles. Turn left (south) on Forset Service Road 505A for 1.5 miles to the Vogel Canyon parking lot.
Facilities: 3 covered picnic tables, 1 vault toilet, 2 horse hitching rails and horse trailer parking, no drinking water, charcoal fires allowed in grills only

Sites of Interest: Geologically scenic Vogel Canyon is a tributary of the Purgatoire River Drainage, 2 permanent springs, four hiking trails (difficulty: easy to moderate), Rock Art, sections of the stage coach road and ruins of the station, stone walled ruins from a depression era homestead

Location: Otero County. From La Junta, Colorado drive southwest along Highway 350 for 16 miles. Turn right (northwest) at County Road 16.5, crossing the railroad tracks and then turn right (northeast) to the parking lot.
Facilities: 2 covered picnic tables with grills, 1 group site (4 covered picnic tables with grills), 1 vault toilet, no drinking water, charcoal fires allowed in grills only, RV and bus parking, 2 horse hitching rails, horse trailer parking, stock water available for horses only

Sites of Interest: 2 hiking trails, Timpas Creek, stone markers where the Santa Fe National Historic Trail Passes, hikers and horse back riders can follow a 3 mile section of the santa fe trail to sierra vista overlook

Location: Bent County. From the East - Take U.S. Highway 50 west from Lamar approximately 20 miles to Hasty. Turn south on School Street and proceed approximately 2 miles. The Visitor Center is on the right as the road curves to the east.

From the West - Take U.S. Highway 50 east from La Junta to Las Animas, approximately 20 miles. Proceed east through Las Animas to Hasty, approximately 16 miles. Turn south on School Street and proceed approximately 2 miles. The Visitor Center is on the right as the road curves to the east.
Facilities: Boat ramps, fishing piers, picnic tables, restrooms, visitor center. Lake Hasty Campground: flush toilets, coin-operated showers, coin-operated laundry facilities, potable water, dump station. electric sites, can accomodate RVs. Point Campground: all sites with fire ring, picnic table, gravel pad; no shade, water, or electricity.
Activities: Camping, hiking, fishing, boating, biking, horseback riding (horses cannot be kept at the campground), jet skiing, sailboarding, swimming, water skiing, swim beach, playground, wildlife viewing
